The Maple is a robust, medium-sized tree with a close, broad, pyramidal, and ultimately egg-shaped crown. It reaches about 12 metres in height. The leaves are deeply laciniated and in autumn they change colour to a striking bright yellow. It is almost immune to mildew and ideally suited to planting as a street tree or in squares. It prefers a heavy, calcareous soil, but also grows on sandy soils provided they are not too dry. Using Acer campestre cultivars it is possible to create very attractive block, cube, or cylinder shapes.
